What are the basic requirements to apply for a Guard Card in California?

To apply, you must submit an application online or by mail with the required fees to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and complete a background check via Live Scan fingerprints.

What training is required to obtain a Guard Card?

Applicants must complete an 8-hour "Power to Arrest" training course and exam, which includes topics on appropriate use of force, legal standards, and ethical responsibilities.

How long does it take to get a Guard Card?

Once your application is submitted and fingerprints are processed, you can work as a security guard with a printout of your Bureau approval and a valid photo ID. The actual card processing by BSIS may take 2-3 weeks.

Are there ongoing training requirements?

Yes, guards must complete 16 hours of additional training within 30 days of receiving their Guard Card and an additional 16 hours within six months, totaling 32 hours.

Can I carry a firearm with a Guard Card?

No, a Guard Card alone does not permit firearm use. A separate exposed firearm permit is required.

Can proprietary security officers carry weapons?

No, proprietary private security officers are not allowed to carry firearms, batons, or other deadly weapons.

What should I do if I change my address?

You must notify BSIS within 30 days of an address change to avoid administrative fines.
